Bottom of the Hudson - Fantastic Hawk

I've looked for the details of Fantastic Hawk and was willing to review it, really an excellent Album. When I came back from Holiday, I saw this message from Absolutely Kosher and was not in the mood to review it anymore...

Dear Friends,

Philadelphia/Brooklyn band Bottom of the Hudson suffered a serious van
wreck on Sunday, July 29th, while returning home after the final date of
a short East Coast tour to promote their new album, Fantastic Hawk,
released just two weeks ago on July 17. While on I-40 near Clinton, NC,
a tire blew out sending the van out of control and flipping it multiple
times. Bassist Trevor Butler was killed in the accident and drummer
Greg Lytle is currently in ICU in Chapel Hill, NC. The other members of
the band, Eli Simon, Michael Prince and William Chesterton Chambers,
suffered minor injuries and were released from the hospital.
We didn't have an opportunity to get to know Trevor Butler as well as we
would have liked, but he was a great guy and a great musician. He was
instrumental in the evolution of the band's sound over the years. In
addition to playing in Bottom of the Hudson for the last several years,
Trevor also was a founding member in fellow-Philadelphia group Coyote.
He was utterly devoted to music and helped many, many bands set-up shows
in Philadelphia. We are devastated by his loss and he will be greatly
missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the band and their families.
Services will be held for Trevor Butler on Thursday in his hometown of
Myrtle Beach, SC. Thanks to everyone who has sent condolences and
well-wishes.

We are currently accepting donations via Paypal (the address is
both@absolutelykosher.com) on behalf of Trevor's family and for Greg's
medical bills resulting from the accident. A benefit show is being
discussed, but we're all still reeling from this tragedy. We will
update our home page (www.absolutelykosher.com, which also has a
donation link) as news of Greg's condition and progress on further
fundraisers comes in. Your generosity in this difficult time is
appreciated.

best,
Cory Brown and everyone at Absolutely Kosher Records

Sorcerer - Divers Do It Deeper

It's the kind of tune you'd like to have o holiday watching the sea at 6AM when the sun rises. You don't need to wake up at that time, might just want to relax before going to sleep. Sorcerer 's music is not exactly dub, it sounds like electronica but with an old synthesizer sounds from the 80's. He is releasing White Magic on Tirk record now. I'm hunting the album details but you can go on his Myspace to listen to his work.

Bottom of the Hudson

I don't really know what to say about this band, Bottom of the Hudson just speak to me. Thy music is not too complex, not too simple. The melody are there and the production is OK. It's the perfect music for a gloomy Sunday. nervous guitar in the background that doesn't destroy the mood and then let the room available for a calm break with violin and something that sounds as an accordion. They will release an album called Fantastic Hawk on the excellent Absolutely Kosher record on the July the 17th.

Jeremy Warmsley - The art of Fiction

Jemery Warmsley is a 23 years old song writers from London. Sometimes, like on "I Promise", I'm hearing Sondre Lerche, sometimes like on "dirty blue jeans" his influence are less predictable (radiohead, Steve Reich, ...). The Album is just amazing he tries to destruct all the anticipated tune and the production surprise you quite often but you'll find plenty of acoustic session on the web that prove his songs to be perfect and of great value when only played at the acoustic guitar. The album "The Art of Fiction" is now out across Europe on Rykodisc. I give Him a 4 out of 5 !

Manu Chao : Rainin Paradize

Have you seen Manu Chao's Sound System live yet ? It's pretty predictable but it's really a nice experience, that guy is really a party animal ! He is back with a new single that he makes free available on his web site. Rainin Paradize has a drum beatPublish Post from the 80's and and irritating guitar solo in the background. he is currently touring the Canada and the US, so don't miss him over there !

Plus/Minus {+/-} - Let's Build A Fire

I promised to look after the album detail of plus/minus after having downloaded the amazing "Steel the blue print". Well I'm still charmed by this band and their album Let's build a Fire, Absolutly Kasher record really has a master piece out here. The album starts like an old vinyl with a jazzy tune, including trumpet that move into the world of Boo Radleys on a slower tempo. Then you are bounced to song called fade out that resists more than 4 minutes before literally exploding; then you understand the band and discover how the drums is playing such an important role in the melody. The drummer is really playing a lead instrument (like on One day you'll be there) and not just a confined to a rhythm role.
My favourite songs are of course "steel the blue print" and also Leap year that remembers me Pinback... They are currently touring europe, don't miss their "the authentic sausagefest tour 2007"

Palomar - All Thinig, Forest

I've hesitated quite a bit before mentioning Palomar. I liked the artwork and the pictures available on their website. Playing on the fact that the band is made up of 1 man and 3 women the pixs are quite funny. By the way, like the Breeders, the man plays the drums! The music is less intuitive than the pixs. Once you get use to Rachel Warren's vocal you will discover that the album is less simple that you thought, there is a crescendo and from track to track the music becomes more aggressive. Palomar has released All Thing, Forest on Misra Record, take the time to listen the album many time before making up your judgement, it's really worth listening.
MP3 : Palomar - Our Haunt

Dj Mayonnaise - Easily Distracted

I guess I was first attracted by the name. As Belgian, you can not pass next such a name without commenting it : DJ Mayonnaise, or in short Mayo. You'll need to buy french chips on the street to understand that :). So Mayo plays down electronica / tempo music you'll like listening while buying clothes in a trendy place. He will release his new album "Still Alive" in July 07 on Anticon.
Perfect Music when you got an headache...

Dntel - Dumb Luck

It took Dntel almost 6 years to recover from the excellent "Life was full of possibilities". At that time I was attracted by the artwork that remembered me the time I was playing with Playmobil :-) Jimmy Tamborello (who is also active as Postal Service) is back with a new album released on SubPop. The Album is called Dumb Luck.

The Go Find - Stars on the Wall

I've already reviewed the disco tune dictionary from this Belgian band and I must admit that The Go Find's album is quite disturbing. They embrace multiple influence and mash them up in this excellent album, Stars on the wall. It goes from electronica to disco with a U-turn to acoustic folk. It makes me remember Day One's first album. My favourite track is Ice Cold Ice for the electronica beat that sounds like an Anticon record. Stars on the wall is released by Morr Music and for the details, The Go Find is the side-project of Orange Black singer/guitarist Dieter Sermeus

Plus/Minus {+/-}

Faboulousssssssssssssssss. I don't believe such thing can exist, {+/-}, pronounce plus minus, is doing rock with a touch of electro and demonstrate how Radiohead's Idiotheque has been consumed and digested by a new generation. I'm hunting for the album details right now !

Xavier Rudd

Australian singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Xavier Rudd is a one of a kind artist with a clear vision, personality, and an independent attitude. It's a one man band, but he plays guitar, , didgeridoos, stomp boxes, djembe drums, and even slide banjo. Intersting Mix! His 6th record, called Food in the Belly is out on Anti.

Dani Wind

I didn't understand what has happened, I was calm and relax and now I'm completely exhausted... When you start listening to Dani Wind' s Balloon Factory you can't resist. It's rock, it's dance, it's baggy, it reminds me the first time I've heard Underworld's song Born Splippy. An UFO in my hear...

The Go Find

The Go Find, a Belgian that has listened to Day One and similar electro pop. The Song Dictionary starts with groovy bass, you'll feel like listening to the intro of Michael Jackson 's Billie Jeane and start tapping the ground with your feet. It takes shape and don't let you go. His album is being released on Morr Music

Alamo Race Track - Black Cat John Brown

The second album of the Dutch Alamo Race Track is worth listening. Black Cat John Brown (the record) is fresh, rock and varies along the 12 songs. The first song tells you all, Black Cat John Brown (the track) starts like in a cowboy movie but get shape rapidly to end up with their personal style: Guitar, Bass guitar, drum, backing vocals and keyboard you play with one finger. My favourite is "The Killing", a song that stay at the borderline, that you want to jump on it but never comes. Go and buy it!

Je Suis France

Je Suis France sounds like what I played when I was young ! Power Pop Rock or something like that. Pavement is surely one of the main influence there. Check out California rules to be convinced ! Dead Meadow

Dead Meadow is working on a new album on Matador, the picture represents the studio sunset sounds because i cant' promote their artwork (check their website and let me know!). They have already announced some tour dates. Their music is not exactly what we could describe as light pop but heavy and loud guitars on a slow tempo. I love that. Listen to At her Open door and wait till the transition around 4:02 min, great stuff !

!!! is a stupid name to be sorted in the shop but quite efficient to make you dance ! Can't stop on my chair... They issue a third record called "Myth Takes" on warp. Seems to rock on stage.
By the way, you should pronounce it [chk chk chk]... does it help ?

Luisa Mandou Um Beijo

LUISA MANDOU UM BEIJO - a indie pop band from Brazil. I love the horn section on that UK sound from the 90's and a female vocal like the pale saint or lush. Listen carefully to the track called Julia with a Boo Radleys sounds ! Note that you can download the full album on their netlabel aregueifa.
